Elks Lodge 860, a century-old landmark at Main and Sweeney streets in downtown North Tonawanda, was called a total loss after a fire Saturday morning that began in the boiler room. When firefighters arrived they used ladder trucks to tame the blaze but the flames were so intense they could not go inside, leaving them little else to do but stand and watch it burn.
