Michael D’Apollo


Michael D’Apollo, of Niagara Falls, died of Alzheimer’s disease on Saturday, October 24, 2009, at home, at the age of 83. He was under the care of his loving wife of 56 years, Shirley. Born in Brooklyn, NY, on January 2, 1926, a son of the late Matteo and Adelina D’Apollo.

He moved to Niagara Falls as a child and attended schools locally. Mr. D’Apollo served in the US Navy during WW II and was honorably discharged in 1946. He was employed for 30 years by the former Kimberly Clark as a winder helper and later for Regal Vending. A longtime member of St. John de LaSalle RC Church, he also sang in the church choir for many years. He had a love for singing, was an avid football fan, always routing for the Buffalo Bills and Notre Dame.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Deborah A. (Jack) Alessi of Niagara Falls, Pamela M. (Raymond) Gillis of the Town of Niagara; a sister, Carmella Campanella of Niagara Falls; Benny D’Apollo of Jamestown, NC and John D’Apollo of Lewiston; son-in-law, Brian (Kathleen) Benedict of Sherrisville, IN; four grandchildren, Lydia Truesdell, Laura D’Apollo, Nicholas D’Apollo and Alexandria Benedict; four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his beloved daughter, Maria Benedict; and a sister, Genevieve Carrano.

There will be no prior visitation. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Wednesday 11 AM in St. John de LaSalle RC Church, 8469 Buffalo Avenue. The interment will be private in St. Joseph RC Cemetery, Niagara Falls. In lieu of flowers, memorials, if desired, may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 2805 Wehrle Drive, Williamsville, NY 14221.
