BUSINESS: Group plans summit to discuss economic development

Local and regional government officials are coordinating a Niagara County Economic Summit to inform the public about business opportunities in the county.

The session will be held from 8 to 11:30 a.m. March 16 in the new terminal at Niagara Falls International Airport.

“As we’ve done in the past, we’d like to tell the public about those opportunities and the economic advantages,” said Richard Updegrove, chairman of the county Legislature’s Economic Development Committee.

Updegrove hopes representatives of local business associations and the business community will attend so the summit will set the stage for sharing information and providing valuable feedback.

Henry Sloma, chairman of the county Industrial Development Agency, said, “Because of federal stimulus initiatives, we have some additional resources available to us this year that we have not had in the past.”

He added, “Our message to the business community is, ‘If you want to build something, come to us.’ We will help you to tap into any and all incentives and programs available. We want to help businesses here to grow and thrive.”

Other summit speakers will include representatives from the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority, the county Center for Economic Development, Empire State Development, the U.S. Small Business Administration and the Niagara County Department of Employment and Training.

Commissioner Samuel Ferraro of the Department of Economic Development, said topics will range from the future of the Niagara Falls airport, economic development groups and resources, low-cost hydropower programs to brownfield redevelopment.
