AMHERST — Calvin Betts scored the deciding basket with 1:38 remaining Tuesday as the Buffalo Bulls beat Central Michigan, 56-55, for their seventh straight win, before an announced crowd of 1,481 at Alumni Arena.
Andy Robinson scored 14 points to lead the Bulls, who are 15-5 overall and lead the Mid-American Conference with a 7-1 record.
Down by a point after Betts’ layup, which was assisted by Rodney Pierce, Central Michigan (6-14, 3-5) had numerous chances to counter. Jacolby Hardiman missed a layup with 21 seconds left.
After the miss, Robinson was left alone and missed an authoritative two-handed slam dunk. Greg Gamble (Niagara Falls) then compounded the Bulls’ mistake by missing two free throws with 12 seconds left.
On the Chippewas final opportunity, Jeremy Allen missed a free throw on the front end of a one-and-one. Marcus Van go the rebound them missed a putback with four seconds to go.
The Bulls led 31-26 at the half and took an 11-point lead with 16:37, but found themselves down 53-48 with 5:28 left.
The Bulls regained the lead with 3:03 left when Robinson set up Betts for a 3-pointer.
Pierce and Sean Smiley each scored eight points for UB. Gamble had six points, four assists and three rebounds. Betts had five points and six rebounds.
Robbie Harman scored a career-high 22 points to lead Central Michigan, while Jordan Bitzer had 20.
The Bulls host Northern Illinois at 2 p.m. Saturday.

- Central Michigan sweeps UB Central Michigan hurlers Ty Dunham and Josh Collmenter each threw shutouts Saturday as the University at Buffalo baseball team dropped a Mid-American Conference doubleheader to the visiting Chippewas at Amherst Audubon Field. CMU won the opener 5-0 and then shutout the Bulls 8-0 in the second contest.
