Warriors fall in Section VI B-crossover game

Tonawanda News — The Tonawanda boys soccer team, after winning the Section VI B-2 Championship on Saturday, was looking to make a little more history Tuesday night when it lined up against East Aurora in the B1-B2 crossover championship game.

But East Aurora, the top-scoring offense in Section VI (119 goals), had other ideas. The Warriors just couldn't contain the Blue Devils and their devastating offensive arsenal, falling 5-0 at Hamburg High School.

"(East Aurora is) a very talented team, they're deep and we knew this was going to be a tough task for us," said Tonawanda coach James Gabor. "Our thing was to try not to make too many mistakes and I think early on some of those goals were from some mental mistakes. Against a good team like this you can't afford to make those mistakes because they'll make you pay and put the ball in the back of the net."

After a strong opening 10 minutes, the Warriors struggled to keep the ball in East Aurora's, end and the Blue Devils slowly started to push the Warriors back. Blue Devils midfielder Quinn Aiken scored the game winner in the 15th minute.

The Blue Devils took a commanding 3-0 lead into halftime and the Warriors were never able to recover. Every run, pass and dribble was contested and when the Warriors' offensive game was shut down the defense seemed to suffer.

Gabor said that despite East Aurora's reputation and skill level, Tonawanda made too many mistakes and failed to make the Blue Devils earn their goals.

"It's a little deflating when you're playing them tough and you give a goal away like that (early on)," Gabor said. "We didn't really make them earn all their goals and I'm not trying to discredit them, but at the same time we made some mistakes and good teams will make you pay."

The Warriors graduate 11 seniors this year and Gabor is hoping the success of the team this season will motivate others to join the team and generate some excitement for soccer in the school.

Gabor also said that every one of his players should feel proud of the season Tonawanda had.

"The guys have a lot to be proud of," he said. "They beat a lot of teams that they probably weren't supposed to beat. I'm sure they're all down and disappointed, but they know what they've accomplished and it wasn't because of one or two guys. It wasn't because it was easy but it happened because they worked hard. I think that will mean a little bit more for them."
