The St. Joe’s football team has made the more than 500-mile, round-trip trek to Steubenville, Ohio the past nine seasons, and the Marauders have came home empty handed each and every time.
This time around, the Marauders are poised to come home with a big ‘W.’
The No. 8 ranked team in New York state, according to MaxPreps.com, St. Joe’s (5-1, 3-0 MMMA) visits the mighty Big Red (7-0) at 7 p.m. tonight at the vaunted Reno Saccoccia Field at “Death Valley” in Steubenville.
“We’re looking to go down there and see if we can break nine consecutive years of losing to Steubenville,” St. Joe’s coach Dennis Gilbert said.
The Marauders are coming off a 48-20 win at Cardinal O’Hara last week and have compiled five straight wins since their opening week loss to Rochester’s Aquinas.
Last season quarterback Chad Kelly and St. Joe’s had a big second half to threaten the host big Red in an eventual 59-39 loss. The Marauders offense has been firing on all cylinders in recent week, and will be a big test for the highly talented Steubenville defense tonight.
“We’re healthy and we’re in good shape and our defense is coming around, which is big,” Gilbert said. “We’re going to need that (tonight) when we go to Steubenville. We need some stops down there.”
The Marauders hope to keep the momentum going especially with the playoffs just a couple of weeks away.
“Everything is moving toward our playoffs,” he said. “That’s what you play for. The kids are excited, we’re excited and thank God we’re healthy.”
Canisius (2-4, 0-1 MMMA) at Cardinal O’Hara (1-5, 0-2 MMAA)
After toughing out a 48-20 loss to St. Joe’s a week ago, the remaining schedule for the Hawks does not get any easier.
Cardinal O’Hara hosts Canisius in a league test before host St. Francis next week and traveling to play Steubenville the next. After that the Monsignor Martin playoffs begin, where it’s likely the Hawks will play either Canisius or Timon at Ralph Wilson Stadium.
“We’d like to pull an upset. Our kids come every day and they work hard and learn the game plan,” O’Hara coach Angelo Sciandra said. “We’re hoping down the stretch to pull some upsets and that’s what we’re striving toward.”
Kyree Carter deserves plenty of credit for carrying the load this season. He had more than 100 yards rushing and two touchdowns against St. Joe’s despite not playing the majority of the fourth quarter due to heat exhaustion. In contrast, the Marauders held Boston College-bound Akeel Lynch to 96 yards rushing the week prior.
Sciandra said he’s extremely proud of his entire team’s effort and expects them to continue to stand tall no matter the circumstances.
“It’s not easy,” he said. “But no one’s throwing in the towel by any means.”
