HS BASEBALL: Warriors win without Stich

CITY OF TONAWANDA — The Tonawanda boys baseball team cruised to another impressive 7-0 win Friday night against Eden at Veteran’s Park.

But the Warriors did so without senior captain Steve Stich.

The shortstop broke his nose at practice on Thursday and is expected to miss a week at the very least, head coach John Frank said.

“It’s tough. He’s been my leadoff hitter and my shortstop for the last three years,” said Frank of Stich, who went 4 for 5 with four RBIs in THS’ season-opening 11-5 win over Cleveland Hill. “He’s a vocal leader on and off the field. He’s a huge loss, so hopefully he won’t be out for long. I feel absolutely awful for him. Hopefully he recovers quickly and gets cleared.”

Frank said Stich will see an ear, nose and throat specialist on Thursday.

Despite the void in the lineup, the Warriors improved to 2-0 on the season.

David Battel continued his hot start with two hits, including a triple and a pair of RBIs. Jordan McCregor regrouped from a slow start Tuesday and hit a solo home run, while scoring twice as well. Kyle Gallivan, Ryan McInnis and Brian McCarthy each had two hits. Shane Foster went six innings on the mound, allowing just five hits, while striking out four.

“I’m very pleased with the first two games seeing as it’s our first two times we’ve been on the diamond,” Frank said. “We were very solid defensively today and I was very pleased with that.”

The Warriors host Kenmore West at 11 a.m. Monday at Veterans’s Park.
