CHARITY: Shoppers can help Food Bank of WNY
The 18th annual Check Out Hunger campaign to benefit the Food Bank of Western New York has kicked off in the Niagara region.
The participating retailers include Price Rite, Tops Friendly Markets, Wegmans, Wilson Farms, Premier Gourmet, Premier Group, and Sugar Creek stores.
Check Out Hunger provides a quick and easy way for shoppers to help feed the needy in the four counties served by the Food Bank of WNY— including Niagara, Erie, Cattaraugus and Chautauqua.
Every time shoppers check out at a participating retailer, they can have the cashier add a donation to their grocery bill. All money raised goes directly to the Food Bank of WNY to help in the local fight against hunger among the less fortunate.
“We are extremely pleased to once again have the area retailers and the local media companies come together for the purpose of fighting hunger in our community,” said Marylou Borowiak, president and CEO of the Food Bank of WNY. “The timing of this drive is ideal since it is a time of the year when our donations are the lowest but the need continues to grow. It is also a time when we are anticipating proposed financial cutbacks from the state of New York.”
During the initial drive 18 years ago, there were four retailers participating and $60,000 was raised. Last year, 10 retailers raised more than $600,000 while increasing the awareness of hunger in WNY.
“Our goal for this year’s campaign is to better last year’s totals, continue to heighten the awareness of hunger in our community and to continue to have enough food readily available for our 400 member agencies to feed over 100,000 less fortunate people each month,” Borowiak said.
A $2 donation will help to distribute 14 meals; $3 will help to distribute 21 meals and $5 will help to distribute 35 meals to those individuals depending on the Food Bank of WNY’s member agencies.
The Food Bank of WNY was founded 30 years ago. The administrative offices and warehouse located at 91 Holt Street in Buffalo, distribute more than 1 million pounds of food each month to 100,000 residents (39 percent of which are children and 11 percent are senior citizens) through its network of 400 member agencies in Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie and Niagara counties.
