Dr. Jean Washtawski-Wende, a 1977 Quality Student, gave the keynote address at the 37th Quality Student banquet.

• The Ken-Ton Kiwanis and Town of Tonawanda Acquettes held their 2nd annual pancake breakfast and basket auction.

1988 - 25 years ago

Maryalice Demler, of North Tonawanda, was named Miss Niagara during a pageant in Niagara-Wheatfield High School. She would go on to compete for Miss New York in July.

• As part of a 50th anniversary celebration of the Chamber of Commerce of the Tonawandas, chamber members were taken on a tour of the Tonawanda News building by News employee Al Roy.

• The 1,140 members of Lodge 2106 International Association of Machinists at Spaulding Fibre authorized their officers to call a strike if a contract settlement could not be reached.
