• The murder-mystery “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari” was being staged by the Towne Players at Thomas Edison School in the Town of Tonawanda. The play was adapted by local author Gary Earl Ross from the classic silent film.

• Della the Mule was spotted pulling an old-fashioned bright red pack cart along River Road in front of the Tonawanda News building. She and her owners – Bud and Patricia Kenney – were on a walking tour of the world which had begun 16 months earlier in Hot Springs, Ark.

• Gov. Nelson Rockefeller broke ground for a new $7.7 million North Grand Island Bridge.

• St. Francis, Our Lady of Czestochowa, Ascension and St. Joseph joined other Catholic churches in ringing their church bells for one hour to mark the beginning of the Second Vatican Council in Rome.
