Tonawanda News — 2002 — 10 years ago

• The DeGraff Hospital Auxiliary was planning a gala event at the Riviera Theatre featuring the Toronto All City All Stars Big Band. The gala was to benefit the Auxiliary’s project to purchase equipment for the hospital’s surgical department.

• North Tonawanda resident Terry Finiki was the first recipient of the Margaret Hay Spence Wotherspoon Nursing Scholarship. The scholarship was set up to honor Wotherspoon who had worked at DeGraff Hospital as well as serving as an industrial nurse at both Durez and National Grinding Wheel.

• The first meeting between a Soviet tanker and the Navy occurred without incident. The Navy allowed the ship through the blockade because it carried no offensive material.

• Student correspondent Janice Caya reported that members of the Cardinal O’Hara debate team — Maureen Stoyle, Therese Wegler, Jeff Spencer and Robin Schimminger — were preparing for an upcoming tournament on the need for European countries to form a common market.
