Sanborn residents to get in the ‘zone’

— — Sanborn is just a small portion of the Town of Lewiston’s makeup. But those in charge want to give its residents the opportunity to speak about the hamlet’s future business development.

Lewiston Supervisor Steve Reiter said the town’s public forum for Sanborn residents, scheduled for 7 p.m. tonight in the Sanborn Fire Hall, 5811 Buffalo St., will give those residents a chance to tell the board what they may or may not want to see in their neighborhood in the next few years and beyond.

“The engineers are going to be bringing up the zoning and master plan for the whole area,” Reiter said. “We’ve been working on it for the last few years, ever since I’ve been supervisor. We feel it’s an important time for Sanborn residents to be involved in the process and have some input on what they feel is important for that area.”

Among the key issues, but certainly not the only one to be addressed, Reiter said, will be the proposed Tim Hortons restaurant which is eyeing a location at 2938 Saunders Settlement Road near the Niagara County Community College campus.

Reiter said the proposal, which the town board declined to take action on at its latest meeting Feb. 13, would be discussed to gather some valuable input from the people who call that area home.

“That parcel right now is a dilapidated house,” Reiter said. “We need to take a look at it and get some residential input. It’s important for us to see if it is something which can work there.”

But Reiter said focusing solely on Tim Hortons isn’t the plan. Other issues will also be addressed, including the hamlet’s current zoning.

The entire area is zoned a special designation called Traditional Neighborhood District, which allows for both commercial and residential development anywhere with very few controls in place. Reiter said the designation was necessary because there are many home businesses in Sanborn, leading to more mixed use properties.

“Sanborn’s a little different, because of the way it’s laid out,” Reiter said. “We’ve planned to talk to those residents there to get input from them. It’s one of the most unique areas in town.”
