Known criminal busted for burglary in town

TOWN OF TONAWANDA — A North Tonawanda man well-known to police in the Twin Cities was arrested in connection with a weekend burglary in the town, police reported Tuesday.

Police arrested Tyler J. Morford, 19, of Goundry Street, at 5:52 a.m. Sunday and charged him with felony counts of burglary and grand larceny, in addition to misdemeanor counts of criminal trespass, criminal possession of stolen property and criminal mischief.

A woman called police to report the burglary after seeing Morford looking at her after he opened her bedroom door. The woman was already awake when she heard a noise downstairs, but didn’t think it was anything suspicious because her mother was also home at the time. She was lying in bed when she heard the bedroom door open and asked, “Mom, is that you?” but no one answered. The woman looked up and saw a light-skinned man, later identified as Morford, looking back at her. She grabbed her phone and called police, at which point Morford left the home.

Police located Morford in the back yard and ordered him to the ground. Morford stood up and took an aggressive stance toward officers, who were forced to take him to the ground, according to police reports.

While searching Morford, police found on him a steak knife and two sets of keys, one for a car and another for a house, both of which belonged to the home owner. In addition, a Dell laptop computer was reported stolen from a living room table.

Police said Morford forced the side door open to gain entry to the single-family home, the location of which police did not disclose.

Morford has appeared in the News’ police blotter and crime reports numerous times within the past few years, including as recently as last month, when he was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance. In May he was charged with felony criminal contempt and misdemeanor harassment for a domestic dispute.

Morford was nearly killed when he smashed a stolen car into a Sweeney Street home while being chased by police on New Year’s Day 2009. North Tonawanda police initially tried to pull him over then for reckless driving.

Morford was knocked unconscious in the crash and spent several days in the intensive care unit at ECMC.
