Two members of the Niagara County Sheriff’s Department were named “Deputies of the Year” on Tuesday in Albany for saving the life of a fellow wounded officer in July.
Deputies Jonathan E. Andres and Shawn P. Grapes received the New York State Sheriffs’ Association’s top award for their quick thinking on July 18 when they found Deputy Allen Gerhardt severely injured on Lake Road in the Town of Porter.
Gerhardt lost control of his vehicle while responding to a call and crashed into a guardrail that sliced through the passenger door and amputated both of his legs.
Andres was first on the scene and discovered Gerhardt unconscious and bleeding profusely. He immediately called for Mercy Flight assistance used his belt to act as a makeshift tourniquet to slow the loss of blood in Gerhardt’s right leg.
Minutes later Grapes arrived and the two officers pulled their injured co-worker from the vehicle. Grapes then used a Emergency Response Team-issued tourniquet on Gerhardt’s left leg.
Throughout the ordeal, Gerhardt was in an out of consciousness and in a state of shock, police reported. Andres and Grapes described Gerhardt as in a confused state and in a considerable amount of stress.
Sheriff James Voutour said in a statement that Andres and Grapes are a shining example of the resourcefulness and dedication exhibited by the department members.
“Deputy Allen Gerhardt is an amazing man who was saved by amazing men,” he said.
Andres and Grapes will also be recognized on the floor of the New York State Senate on Monday.
Andres is the brother of North Tonawanda Councilman Richard Andres.
