Tonawanda News — 2002 — 10 years ago

• Robert DuBois led the Canal Fest parade with a salute to all emergency responders as he drove a fire truck that he purchased from a New York City organization that was one of the vehicles that responded to the terrorist attacks on 9/11. 

• North Tonawanda’s Community Christian Church changed its name to Vanguard Christian Church.

1987 — 25 years ago

• Grand Island Supervisor Laverne Luther and Erie County Legislator Chuck Swanick announced that nearly 5,000 residents signed a petition in support of building a third bridge to Grand Island, connecting the island with the Tonawandas.

• The NT Theatre Workshop announced a new program added to their already established year-round performance schedule. The new program, the NT Fairy Tale Theatre will tour the playgrounds in NT.

1962 — 50 years ago

• North Tonawanda Harbor Police, led by Capt. Harry Winters, arrested six boaters who exceeded the 6 mph speed limit on the Erie Canal. 

• The North Tonawanda Common Council unanimously passed a resolution setting the compulsory retirement age for city employees at 70 years of age.

1942 — 70 years ago

• In conjunction with the U.S. government’s effort to conserve rubber and to produce more scrap rubber, employees on the bascule bridge between Tonawanda and North Tonawanda were notified that no automobile tires were to be used as bumpers on the boats passing through the canal.

• Stan Rojek, currently playing for the Montreal team of the International Baseball League, was confined to a hospital in Rochester with a high fever due to tonsillitis.
