Kenmore goes green with Buffalo ReUse

KENMORE — The Kenmore Village Improvement Society has partnered with a Buffalo organization that specializes in green demolition for the collection of recyclable materials leftover from home improvement projects.

On the third Saturday of each month from June through October, Kenmore residents are encouraged to drop off reusable materials, such as appliances, windows and doors at a Buffalo ReUse truck situated near the Kenmore municipal building at Delaware Avenue and Delaware Road. The donations are tax deductible.

Rather than being thrown out, the items will be taken to the Buffalo ReUse store on Northampton Street in Buffalo, which resells high quality building materials to home owners at a low cost. The money generated from the store’s sales helps fund some of its other programs, including a community garden and its green demolition and salvaging company, the first in Western New York.

“If we didn’t have the revenue from the store, we would not be able to do those things,” said Buffalo ReUse’s Caesandra Seawell. The store also reinforces the organization’s mission. “We want to be an example of environmental stewardship. If you’re respecting the environment, you’re also respecting the community you live and work in,” she said.

A series of five Saturday drop-offs have been scheduled in conjunction with the Kenmore Farmers’ Market. They will be held from 9 a.m. to noon June 19, July 17, Aug. 21, Sept. 18 and Oct. 16.

“Instead of having it go up to a landfill in Niagara Falls where it will lay there for much longer than any of us will be alive, people can bring it to the Village Green and know that it’s going to be re-used in someone’s home,” said KVIS founder Melissa Foster.

It’s the first time Buffalo ReUse has partnered with another community, and Foster hopes the arrangement will extend into the future.

The idea came from KVIS’ Public Housing Committee. “We talked last spring about the amount of recyclable items and trash that goes out to the curb each week,” Foster said. Members then decided to approach Buffalo ReUse about organizing a series of collections.

Foster has visited Buffalo ReUse’s store and is impressed by the amount of goods available there. “It’s vast. They have everything you can imagine that can go into a home, and it’s very well organized,” she said.
