A Niagara County sheriff’s deputy was critically injured early Monday after he lost control of his patrol car in Ransomville.
Allen Gerhardt, 36, of Newfane, was listed in stable condition in the trauma unit of Erie County Medical Center late Monday. The extent of Gerhardt’s injuries were not made public Monday on Gerhardt’s wife’s request.
According to the sheriff’s department, Gerhardt was answering a fellow deputy’s call for assistance in a traffic accident case about 1:30 a.m. For reasons the department has not yet determined, Gerhardt lost control of his patrol car and struck a guard rail near 2594 Lake Road.
Before Gerhardt’s accident, according to Sheriff James Voutour, a deputy was interviewing a person near Youngstown-Lockport and Ransomville roads when he heard a crash. The deputy checked up on the noise and found that a driver, later identified as Todd M. Hauser, 35, of 2541 Youngstown-Lockport Road, had struck an unoccupied, parked vehicle. When the deputy approached, Hauser fled the scene on foot, reports said. The deputy called for backup and two others, including Gerhardt, responded.
Hauser was apprehended by Lewiston police and was charged with driving while intoxicated, leaving the scene of a property damage accident and moving from lane unsafely.
Additional charges are pending, as the Niagara County District Attorney’s office is looking into whether Hauser can be held criminally liable for Gerhardt’s accident, Voutour said.
Gerhardt joined NCSD in August 2008. He’s a former state parks police officer and a pilot with the New York Army National Guard who did a tour of duty in Iraq. He and his wife have three children.
A deputy will remain at the hospital with Gerhardt and his family until he’s recovered, Voutour said.
