Tonawanda News — The Town of Tonawanda Environment Commission and the Town Police Club are holding a holiday lights contest with a different kind of goal — energy efficiency.
To enter, contestants must create a holiday light display that uses energy efficient ideas. The contest will be judged by the commission and the police club is awarding gift certificates for the winners in the following categories:
• Environmental efficiency.
• Most creative display.
• Best classic display.
• Best themed display.
• The most holiday spirit.
• The “WOW” facto.r
The town is encouraging residents to use decorations that don’t require electricity and use LED light strands and rope lights.
“Other energy-conscious decorations offer the same light quality as traditional holiday lights but operate on only a fraction of the cost – up to an 80 percent cost savings,” the town’s release states. “LED’s are available at most local retail outlets selling outdoor holiday decor.”
Contest applications are available on www.tonawanda.ny.us and in the supervisor’s office. They are due back in the Municipal Building by Dec. 7.
Judging will take place the night of Dec. 10 and winners will be announced at the Dec. 17 town board meeting.
The municipal building is located at 2919 Delaware Ave. in Kenmore.
