• North Tonawanda Fire Chief David Rogge said the Fire Dept.’s budget had only increased by $7,000 in ten years. While spending hadn’t gone up, he said, updated equipment was hard to come by.
• Promoter Frank Sansone thought Canal Fest could be improved with big name entertainment. Canal Fest Director Larry Denef said that larger acts would cause amplified headaches for event organizers.

• Scott Blajszczak, Jill Henry, Nikki Smith, and Joshua Smith were among pupils rehearsing the operetta “Pink Bread” to be presented in St. Matthew’s school gym.
• Dr. Roy Clare, organist and choirmaster at Buffalo’s Central Presbyterian Church, performed a concert on the newly-rebuilt organ at Third Presbyterian Church in North Tonawanda.

• Walter Jesella, Michael Midura, Richard Swiniuch, Karen Snopkowski, Jeffrey Heller, and Jeanne Beno, all fifth graders in Grant School’s accelerated class, were among students who staged the play, “Aladdin and His Wonderful Lamp.”
• Mrs. Helen G. Silver was named manager of Morrison’s Store at 27 Main St., Tonawanda.
1943 — 70 years ago
• Prominent industrialist and civic leader William Kibler died at his home on Clinton Street. He was a member of the Buffalo Steel Company when it opened its plant here in 1900. He was also president of the Tonawanda School board for 16 years.
• Zuckmaier Bros. Department store was advertising Spring Fashioned Budget Prints in dress styles to flatter every figure – ranging in price from $2.98 to $8.95.
