Robbery suspect takes leap

Tonawanda News — NIAGARA FALLS — Falls police believe a man responsible for an attempted robbery of a convenience store in the 9100 block of Niagara Falls Boulevard Friday afternoon attempted to evade arrest by jumping from the third floor of an apartment complex moments later.

Joseph Baughman, 33, 1659 Niagara Falls Blvd., was charged with second-degree attempted robbery, second-degree criminal trespass and resisting arrest.

Det. Dan Dobrasz said Baughman entered the store at approximately 3 p.m. to withdraw money from the store’s automatic teller machine. He was apparently declined, Dobrasz said, and instead decided to get the money he desired from the store’s cash registers.

“He decided to make a withdrawal from the store, instead,” Dobrasz said. “But the (employees) wouldn’t give him anything. He tried again to come around to the register. The store manager refused him and basically chased him out of there.”

Officers responded to the reported attempted robbery and Dobrasz said investigators met with the person who drove Baughman to the store. He said they were given Baughman’s address and arrived at the apartment building he resides in, only to confront him in the stairwell heading up to his apartment.

Dobrasz said police tried to stop him, but Baughman entered an apartment on the third floor and jumped out the window to the street below. He ran for about a block before surrendering, he said.

Dobrasz said Baughman was taken to Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center for treatment following the incident.
