Tonawanda News — 2002 — 10 years ago

• The men and women who transformed the out-dated Niagara Falls Convention Center into a world-class casino were the invited guests to a pre-opening “Play Night” at the casino which was scheduled to open in two days.

• The City of Tonawanda led Erie County in the number of women who held government seats, according to a recent report.

1987 — 25 years ago

• The Empire State Sled Dog Drivers Race that was scheduled to take place at River Oaks Golf Course on Grand Island was cancelled due to lack of snow.

• Dave and Kathy Lorenc Recchione were featured in Magical Notes at the Lancaster Opera House.

1962 — 50 years ago

• John Majewski, student reporter for Bishop Gibbons, reported that a new school paper, Northern Lights, would go to press soon.

• The Town of Pendleton was one of the fastest-growing towns in Niagara County with $684,710 worth of building improvements.

1942 — 70 years ago

• A person who was 14 years old at the time of his registration for War Ration Book 1 and was now 15 years old was NOT entitled to use Book 1 for coffee. Only 15 year olds could use Book 1 to buy coffee.

• In order to furnish adequate water supply to homes to be occupied at Colin Kelly Heights state housing project and to ensure sufficient pressure at the Spaulding Fibre plant at all times, Tonawanda aldermen took action to install a 12 inch main at Hinds Street and smaller pipe at Enterprise Street and Seventh Avenue.
