• The Pentagon ordered a major military force to the Persian Gulf in preparation for a possible war with Iraq.

• Tonawanda, North Tonawanda and the State of New York all claimed that they were not responsible for clearing snow from the sidewalks on the Seymour Street Bridge.

1987 — 25 years ago

Joseph Scarpena and Michael Kenney were sworn in as City of Tonawanda police officers.

• Channel 4 news reporter Wadi Sawabini visited the 8th grade class at Franklin Middle School to discuss the use of computers in journalism.

1962 — 50 years ago

• Mount St. Mary High School hosted a two-day Liturgical Institute.

• New York state purchased additional property next to the Tonawanda Armory for $18,500 where a maintenance garage was to be built.

1942 — 70 years ago

Mary Louise Nice was scheduled to be a principal speaker at a testimonial dinner for New York’s “favorite son” Sen. Jim Mead whom Pres. Roosevelt wanted to make governor. Miss Nice, a school teacher, was a Democrat in an overwhelmingly Republican city.

• Funeral services were conducted for Dr. Charles T. Crance, 864 Payne Ave., who died Saturday. Dr. Crance located to the Tonawandas in 1905.
