Tonawanda News — A routine traffic stop in the City of Tonawanda became alarming Thursday night when officers discovered a loaded gun in the back of the driver’s vehicle, according to police.
Sean C. Payne, 42, of Orchard Parkway, Niagara Falls, was pulled over on Niagara Street for speeding. He was also charged with suspended registration, operating a motor vehicle without insurance and a license plate violation.
“After all that, it was discovered he had a loaded gun in the back seat,” Lt. Fredric Foels said. “And not only was it loaded, it did not have a safety on.”
Officers were able to secure the Mossberg shotgun and ejected nine shells from it, according to Foels.
“Fortunately the officers were vigilant enough to see it,” Foels said.
Payne was additionally charged with possession of a loaded firearm in a motor vehicle, which is an unclassified felony. He was held for court.
The incident occurred at around 6:24 p.m.
“Why was it in the car, why was it loaded, why was the safety off ... we don’t know,” Foels said. “This is the reason stops are done properly and with procedure. That is why officers are always extra cautious.”
