NORTH TONAWANDA: New Riviera Theatre staff member focuses on gaining volunteers

Did you make a New Year’s resolution to get out more, to volunteer, to make use of your talents to help a nonprofit organization?

If so, Alanna Pohl Hughes, the newly hired house manager for the Riviera Theatre in North Tonawanda, has her eye on you.

“We’re looking for volunteers in many areas of the theater,” Hughes said. “One of my jobs will be to make sure volunteers — and patrons and public as well — find the Riviera friendly and welcoming.”

One of Hughes’ goals is to have “usher meetings” before patrons arrive.

“That way,” she said, “we communicate to the best of our ability and knowledge what patrons should expect from the show and everyone has the same information to share with patrons. I also plan to hold a formal training sessions for new volunteers….perhaps once or twice a month.”

Working with Hughes is Linda Costa, a part time employee who works in the office and handles public relations and sales.

“I worked at the Lancaster Opera House for more than 25 years,” Costa said. “That’s where I met Alanna who also worked there. I retired and received a call asking if I’d like to work a couple days a week at the Riviera. I love it,” she enthused.

Costa quickly notes the difference between the two venues.

“Lancaster’s small, only about 300 seats as compared to the Riviera’s 1,100,” Costa said. “So there’s lots to do and volunteering here is a good thing. There’s something for everyone and volunteers will have a lot of fun.”

Volunteers are needed as ushers, concession stand and box office workers, ticket-takers, as well as those whose talents are in carpentry, plastering, electrical and other areas of the physical plant.

“The hours and days are flexible,” Hughes said. “Because there are so many shows, movies and events happening, volunteers can choose what’s best for them.”

The Riviera is also looking toward service organizations and high school students who need community service hours and would like to help out with projects at the theater.

“Volunteers are the backbone of the theater,” Frank Cannata executive director, said. “We’ve expanded the number and diversity of our shows and we’re attracting younger audiences. We have a great staff and our volunteers are outstanding.”

Because Hughes is aware that many people hesitate to start something new on their own, she suggests volunteering with a friend or family member.

So if your resolution is to get more involved in the community or the arts, the Riviera can fill both those desires.

“And,” Hughes added, “if people really haven’t made that New Year’s resolution, I’m planting the idea that they should have and prompt them to call.”
