Fire ruins town home

Tonawanda News — A fire engulfed the entirety of a Town of Tonawanda home Wednesday afternoon, according to authorities.

The fire took place at 511 University Ave., located in the Kenilworth Fire Company district, and was reported at about 1:45 p.m.

“The home is inhabitable at the moment,” Kenilworth Chief Thomas Yager said.

The structure is a single family, two-story home. One resident was home at the time of the fire, but was able to safely get out of the home.

The cause of the fire is not known, but it appears it originated somewhere in the basement, and extended through both stories and the attic.

“The first crews there saw a lot of fire and smoke all over the home,” Yager said.

In addition to Kenilworth, the Village of Kenmore Fire Department, Brighton Fire Company, Ellwood Fire District, Sheridan Park Volunteer Fire District.

Eggertsville Hose Company took over duties at Kenilworth’s Fire Hall during the fire.

Crews were at the scene for two hours, and a Kenilworth firefighter suffered a minor cut to his hand.

The exact cause and amount of monetary damage is still being determined.
