Tonawanda News — Maybe it’s the Herschell Carrousel Museum. Or the Riviera Theatre. Maybe it’s a park, or a person, or a school.
Whatever it is, North Tonawanda City Clerk-Treasurer Scott P. Kiedrowski wants to know what NT children love about their city.
This marks the third year Kiedrowski has sponsored the Easter essay contest for NT students in kindergarten through sixth grade. The 2013 version asks them to, in 100 words or fewer, tell the Easter Bunny why they are “egg”cited to live in the City of North Tonawanda, complete with an illustration or photograph.
Kiedrowski said the contest has received a good response the past two years, and he hopes for an even better one this year.
“I am just overjoyed by the amount of calls I’ve received already,” he said. “Parents have stopped by with their kids to ask if we’re doing it again this year. It’s a pretty unique feeling to know that all the kids in school look forward to it.”
Applications and rules for the contest are available at www.northtonawanda.org under the “What’s New” tab. Applications were also sent home Wednesday with students at NT schools.
Completed entries can be mailed to Kiedrowski at City Hall or dropped off in person by 5 p.m. March 29. Since the deadline is Good Friday, when City Hall is closed, entries may be placed that day in the 24-hour drop box located at the top of the steps at City Hall.
Winners will receive a special prize, as well as a certificate, at 6:30 p.m. April 16 during a Common Council meeting. Superintendent of North Tonawanda Schools Gregory Woytila and Kiedrowski will present the prizes and certificates.
Last year, kites were given as prizes, Kiedrowski said, and he hopes to come up with something as popular this year. The 2012 contest resulted in more than 150 stories and drawings displayed at City Hall.
“I’m hoping we get as good a response this year as we have had in past years,” he said. “If you look at it through their eyes, it’s interesting. I’m looking forward to see what excites them about NT.
“We’re looking forward to reading them.”
