Former Niagara-Wheatfield Superintendent Carl Militello is receiving a $50,000 payment from the district, according to a separation settlement agreed to on Feb. 1.
The document, obtained by Greater Niagara Newspapers, stipulates the lump sum payment as part of the pay out to Militello in exchange for his immediate retirement from the district.
In addition to the lump sum, which must be paid on or before Sept. 15, Militello is also scheduled to receive the rest of his salary for the current school year at a rate of $159,658 per year and a payment of $36,588, the equivalent of 55 sick, vacation and personal days.
Full-care benefits equivalent to other district administrators are also included, with nine years of coverage in health, dental and prescription until Militello, 55, reaches 65 years of age. According to the agreement, the district would be responsible for 90 percent of all premium costs during the time frame.
School board members said they were unable discuss specifics of the agreement with Militello due to confidentiality agreements.
The Angola native was hired by Niagara-Wheatfield in August 2008, returning to Western New York after a stint as superintendent of the Carthage Central School District near Watertown.
This past June, Militello was awarded a new contract, but the terms were not clearly specified and a dispute erupted between him and the new school board which took office in July. Militello filed an appeal with the state Commissioner of Education’s office. The separation agreement requires the appeal be dropped.
Militello’s final months with the district were tumultuous following the release of an audit by Drescher & Malecki which found the district approximately $2.3 million in the negative this year.
District labor unions also called for his resignation in January following accusations of bullying its leadership.
Business Manager Kerin Dumphrey has assumed interim superintendent duties until a permanent replacement can be located.
