• Niagara Falls native JoAnn Ward was chosen as a contestant on the television show “Survivor: The Amazon.”

• Sportsplex sought Niagara County IDA assistance with financing the construction of a $6.5 million 80,000-square-foot addition to their facility that would include a domed soccer field.

1988 — 25 years ago

Leslie Kingston of Kenmore was named NYS Junior Miss during a pageant in Buffalo and received a $1,200 scholarship.

• New officers of the Niagara Hose Volunteer Fire Company were Jerry Richardson, David King, David Dexheimer and Joseph Armenia.

1963 — 50 years ago

• The true story of Johnny Clem – a 10-year-old boy who ran away from home and became one of the Civil War’s most honored battle heroes – was to be dramatized in two full-hour color parts entitled “Johnny Shiloh” on “Walt Disney’s Wonderful World of Color.”

• The oldest building in the area, Jay’s Log Cabin, was up for sale, along with some adjacent properties, for a total price tag of $150,000.

1943 — 70 years ago

• Housewives of the Tonawandas were being asked to assemble all the silk stockings they could find which were in a condition to be thrown out. The Girl Scouts were to make a house-to-house canvass for this express purpose.

• The Maygar Hungarian Reformed and Evangelical Church located at First and Oliver streets bought United States Defense Bonds in the amount of $1,498, representing the full amount of savings of the church for their general building repair fund.
