Tonawanda News — 2003 — 10 years ago

• North Tonawanda’s hockey team defeated St. Joseph’s “A” 4-2 in game one of the Western New York Club League semifinal series at Hockey Outlet. Sean McAndrew scored three goals and added an assist for North Tonawanda.

• Local officials of the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station were looking at ways to make the base more viable and efficient and less likely to appear on the next nation-wide closure list due out in two years.

1988 — 25 years ago

• Wales Wesson, executive director of the DeGraff Hospital Foundation, presented the ‘Above and Beyond the Call Award’ to Carmela and Charles Amabile for their generosity and commitment toward the Foundation’s efforts.

• A Chamber of Commerce Membership Gala “Night at the NEWS” was held at the Tonawanda News building – featuring champagne and hors d’oeuvres served by Rores Deerwood Restaurant.

1963 — 50 years ago

• Boy Scout Troop 584 received its charter during a Court of Honor ceremony at Salem United Church of Christ. Richard Ewell succeeded Alan Beutner as scoutmaster.

• Contractor Phil Dezik was offering an Open House in the all new Greenfield Acres Sub-division located on Homestead Drive off Warner Ave. New homes featured tiled kitchens and baths and colored bathroom fixtures.

1943 — 70 years ago

• With the lowest city tax rate in 10 years, $17.50 per thousand dollars of assessed valuation, the North Tonawanda Common Council passed its 1943 budget.

• Former Tonawanda Evening News reporter Frank Stephan was playing a daring role on the Home Front as one of the ace test pilots employed by the Glenn L. Martin Company, builder of the B-26 bomber.
