— — The City of Tonawanda Fire Department will host a 9/11 memorial service at 9:45 a.m. Saturday, in front of Fire Headquarters, 44 William St.

The service will honor the brave firefighters, law enforcement officers and civilians who died on that fateful day and those that have died from injuries and illnesses that resulted from the horrific attacks.

Firefighters, police officers, EMS personnel as well as the general public are invited.

A total of 343 firefighters died when the Twin Towers in New York City collapsed, by far the worst tragedy ever recorded in the fire service where a multitude of firefighters lost their lives at a single event.

Firefighters gather on this date every year to remember not only their brother firefighters from FDNY but to remember all those individuals who were killed on that day.

“Police officers, civilians as well as the soldiers have paid the ultimate price in the fight against terrorism,” fire chaplain Tim Newman, a Tonawanda career firefighter, said.

“It is hard to believe that it has been nine years since the tragedy,” said fire captain Pat McNulty.

Fire chief Charles Stuart and department fire chaplain Rev. Ken Wood will speak at the service.

All are invited.
