Buffalo Business First’s annual guide to area schools goes on sale today, including the business journal’s latest rankings of 97 districts throughout Western New York.
North Tonawanda, Ken-Ton and Tonawanda City school districts all ranked roughly in the middle of the pack of those compared throughout the eight-county region. Business First used four years of test data compiled by the New York State Education Department, scoring each district on a 100-point scale, “reflecting the collective performance of its elementary, middle and high schools,” the publication announced Thursday.
In addition, the publication also has released specialized rankings of districts in seven areas: cost effectiveness, overachievement, administrative efficiency, socioeconomics, student access, teacher pay and experience.
Tonawanda City School District ranked highest out of the Tonawandas, coming in 38th on the general list of 97 districts.
North Tonawanda, which ranked 53rd overall, was mentioned among 10 schools apiece in the respective areas of teacher pay, teacher experience and administrative efficiency. Kenmore-Tonawanda school district ranked 48th overall and was ranked eighth of ten schools noted for their teacher pay, while North Tonawanda was ranked sixth in that category.
The business journal’s editors concluded change from last year’s overall district rankings was minimal.
“This marks Williamsville's seventh straight year atop the standings — and its 10th No. 1 finish in the 19 years that Business First has been ranking the region's school districts,” a story accompanying the numbers states. “ ... Clarence is on equally familiar ground, holding second place for the seventh consecutive year. Rounding out this year's top five are East Aurora, Alfred-Almond and Amherst.”
Full details will be available in Business First's 2010-2011 Guide to Western New York Schools, which hits newsstands today. Highlights are also available at the newspaper's website: buffalo.bizjournals.com.
