A stint in a hospital bed is no reason for patients to miss their favorite TV shows, officials with Western New York’s Catholic Health system insist.
The group operating three major hospitals throughout the region, including Kenmore Mercy, announced this week they will become the first hospital system in the eight-county region to offer free television and telephone service.
“We’re not only health care providers, we’re also part of the community. We’ve committed to delivering the highest quality care and making our patients’ experience the best it can be is a big part of the healing process,” Joe McDonald, president of Catholic Health, said.
A statement issued Monday touts “staying connected” to familiar habits like watching a particular show, or keeping in touch with friends and family during recuperation or treatment adds comfort for patients.
Regular fees for television and telephone service was $4.25 per day and $3.25 per day, respectively. Those charges — which had never been covered under public or private insurance — were eliminated from patients’ bills beginning this year.
Free wireless Internet service has been offered since 2007, a statement from Catholic Health states.
Television service at the group’s hospitals also includes closed-circuit coverage of Catholic Mass.
Hospitals in the system include Kenmore Mercy, Mercy Hospital of Buffalo, Sisters of Charity and its St. Joseph campus as well as home care, the Heart Center, rehabilitation centers and long term and senior care.
The free services are available at all three major hospitals at Kenmore Mercy, Mercy and Sisters of Charity including the St. Joseph campus.
