LCDC head named

Tonawanda News — North Tonawanda has a new director of community development after long-time head Jim Sullivan stepped down last month.

Richard L. Tindell was chosen by Mayor Rob Ortt and Sullivan to head the city’s development arm as well as the Lumber City Development Corp., both of which are considered crucial to the city’s plan to reinvent itself.

Tindell will have big shoes to fill as Sullivan brought in millions of dollars for the city, largely through state and federal grants.

However, Tindell has a slew of experience of his own, with various leadership positions including time spent as director of planning and development and executive director of the industrial development agency for Wyoming County. He also led Erie County’s Cornell Cooperative Extension and was a project manger for the Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper.

Tindell graduated with a Bachelors degree in environmental design and planning, and a Masters Degree in urban and regional planning from the State University of New York at Buffalo. All told, he has more than 20 years in the field.

“Richard’s experience, especially in the areas of economic development, will allow him to step into the job day one,” Ortt said. “I am confident he will continue the great work started under Jim Sulli

van.”

Sullivan had more than 40 years of experience and was brought in to bolster the city’s economic renaissance under former Mayor David Burgio.

Both Ortt and Sullivan conducted interviews to find the outgoing director’s replacement after receiving more than 22 applications for the position.

Tindell will begin his new post on Monday. The common council is expected to approve the appointment tonight.
