• Tonawanda’s Family Offense Unit handled more than 2,200 cases and assisted in nearly 600 arrests.

• Patricia Kilbury opened up her home as a foster care site for animals of military personnel who has been deployed overseas.

1988 — 25 years ago

• Timothy Reidy, Ann Marie Hedges, and Julie Perry were the winners of the Ken-Ton Sertoma Club’s fourth annual National Heritage Essay Contest.

• Erie County Legislature Majority Leader Leonard Lenihan stated that he felt it might be time for Erie County to call it quits in the 18-year-old legal fight over the aborted dome stadium project.

1963 — 50 years ago

• Kenmore’s only custom tailor, Anthony Polizzi, celebrated the 21st anniversary of his business.

• Ronald Tokash was elected president of the First Aid Unit of the Kenmore Volunteer Fire Department.

1943 — 70 years ago

• Two small children were saved from a flame-filled bedroom and their mother was injured in jumping with one of them from a second story veranda in escaping a roaring fire which gutted the two story frame tavern of Mrs. Anna Wrazin of 444 Oliver Street. The injured woman was Mrs. Frank Wolfe.

• A communication from Henry J. Koch, former city sealer of weights and measures, asking for a year’s leave of absence to work in a defense plant, was “received and filed” by the North Tonawanda Common Council. After enactment of a local law several weeks ago giving the Council power to appoint a sealer of weights and measures, City Health Inspector Alex Nelson was named to the post.
