• The North Tonawanda girl’s soccer players wearing their varsity team outfits attended a school board meeting asking for their own playing field.
1987 — 25 years ago
• The Rev. Jesse Jackson volunteered his services to help meditate a settlement between DeGraff’s Board of Trustees and Nurses United as the first strike in the hospital’s 75 year history continued.
• Middleton Dan wrote that the Town of Tonawanda once had more airports than any other community in Western New York. There was the Consolidated Airfield off Military Road not far from the City of Tonawanda line and the Curtiss Flying Field off Niagara Falls Boulevard at Sheridan Drive.
1962 — 50 years ago
• A silver scalpel, rather than the customary pair of scissors, was used at the formal opening of the $150,000 new wing at Doctors Hospital on Two Mile Creek Road.
• Peter Kedzierski of the Town of Tonawanda was the youthful rocket belt operator who had recently traveled more than 815 feet in a record distance flight at Textron’s Bell Aerosystems Co. Flying 30 feet in the air, the youth reached a peak speed of 60 mph.
1942 — 70 years ago
• A touchdown by the Tonawanda High School football team in the closing minutes of the T-NT game gave Tonawanda the win 7-0 at the Payne Avenue gridiron amid freezing temperatures and a gale of wind.
• Igor Sikorsky, inventor of the helicopter, the direct-lift airplane, predicted construction of thousands in the next two decades
