The Olcott Polar Bear Swim for Sight, sponsored by the Lions Club, will take to the waters of Olcott Beach on March 4.
Considering the weather we’ve had this winter, conditions aren’t expected to be Arctic, but the water temperature will be in the 30s and the air and wind-chill can be colder, not that it’s kept participants away since its informal inception in 1968.
Swim registration will be held from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. when hundreds of people will take a dip into the freezing Lake Ontario water. It’s all for fun and fundraising.
The swim has grown from an average of 200 swimmers annually to 1,000 and more. Contributions from swimmers and supporters aid the Lions Club and community needs.
All swimmers must register prior to the swim and the minimum swimmer contribution is $20. All swimmers receive a Polar Bear T-shirt and there are special rewards for raising $100 or more.
Swimmers who raise $250 will receive a jacket with a “Swim for Sight” logo and swimmers who raise $500 will get a dinner gift certificate.
All swimmers must wear sneakers or protective footwear, bring a blanket, dry clothes and a helper. Only one helper will be allowed to accompany each swimmer.
Hot food and beverages will be provided. Included are the Newfane Lions Chowder Sale; Gasport Lions Hot-dog Cart; Youngstown Lions Italian Sausage and Newfane Lacrosse Chicken B-B-Q.
Before and after the swim, there’s food and fun on Main Street.
Donations are made payable to: Olcott Lions Club, P.O. Box 316, Olcott, N.Y. 14126.
