Winter festival to take place, without winter

— — Not normally a problem in a region famous for its snow, the City of Tonawanda’s Winter Fest 2012 is looking more and more likely to be an indoor event this Saturday, after abnormally high temperatures continue to upset events throughout Western New York.

Mandy Galas, interim director for the recreation department, which puts on the function along with the school district’s Parent-Teacher-Student Association, said there will still be something for everyone to enjoy.

“We’re probably not going to be having the sledding hill or snow sculptures but we’re still hoping for a good turnout.” she said. “It’s difficult because it’s weather permitting.”

While many communities hold similar events to drum up economic gains for local business, Galas said the city’s festival, which is held Saturday on Hinds Street at the Middle School/High School, is more focused on simply getting the community together.

Flag football games are still scheduled to take place. The schedule by age group is:

• Kindergarten to second grade, noon.

• Grades 3 to 5, 1 p.m.

• Grades 6 to 8, 2 p.m.

• Grades 9 to 12, 3 p.m.

Those seeking to play should report to the track at the appropriate time.

and fire department representatives are planning to have a bonfire, though the rest of the day will be targeted to warmer and dryer indoor happenings.

Movies will be shown in the school’s auditorium, a three-on-three basketball tournament is in the works and video games such as Dance, Dance Revolution, Just Dance and Guitar Hero will be available. The poll will be open for activities throughout the day with lifeguards on hand, while all three gymnasiums will have crafts and kids games.

A chili cook-off, Chinese auction, bake sale and other food will be sponsored by the Tonawanda Youth Board and the PTSA for a fee, though all other events are free of charge.

“The kids have a blast,” said Karen Kisloski, vice president of PTSA at Fletcher Elementary School. “I have three kids myself. Last year we just stayed inside the whole time.”

While organizers are still holding out for a light dusting of the white stuff, forecasters are indicating the chances are slim.

“It is what it is,” Kisloski said.

The festival will take place from 12 to 6 p.m. For more information or to make a donation to the Chinese auction or bake sale, call event organizer Elizabeth Olka at 870-6577.
