LEWISTON —
The cause of a small fire inside the Barton Hill Hotel and Spa in the Village of Lewiston remained under investigation late Monday, Village Mayor Terry Collesano said.
Collesano said the fire broke out in an unoccupied room on the first level of the hotel around 2:30 p.m. Crews from Lewiston Fire Co. No. 1 responded and broke through a window in order to battle the fire and smoke.
Collesano said extensive damage was found in the room where the fire started and two adjoining rooms were effected.
“The hotel is closed down until they clean it up,” Collesano said. “And I’ve heard that the sprinkler system in the building didn’t work as expected.”
Collesano said any further questions would need to be addressed to fire chief Les Myles. Repeated calls to him and Diane Finkbeiner, owner of the Barton Hill, went unreturned.
Located at 100 Center St., the 72-room hotel has been in financial hot water, fighting off foreclosure as the hotel fell behind on its mortgage and has owed thousands of dollars in back taxes to the county, school district and in state sales taxes.
