Tonawanda News — 2002 — 10 years ago

• Members of the 78th Naval Construction Battalion of World War II renewed their friendships during their annual reunion which included a trip to the Seebee Memorial and a chicken chowder lunch at the Seebee Island X-8 club hall.

• NT’s Golf Committee proposed that a $1 fee be added to each day’s play for the next year with the money to be used to upgrade and maintain Deerwood Golf Course. 

1987 — 25 years ago

• A record 700 students in grades four to 12 from Riverview and Tonawanda High School participated in the 16th annual Turkey Trot.

• Buffalo blues star Shakin Smith and his band — guitarist Johnny James, bass player Steve Gomes and drummer Ivo Renneu —performed at Soos’ Oliver Street Café.

1962 — 50 years ago

• Architects presented a sketch of the proposed new Gratwick Hose Building to be built on Little Ward Road, near Oliver Street. The building was to have space for a mechanical shop, offices, the fire truck and a cocktail lounge.

• Flames destroyed the 50-year old frame building on the corner of Adam and Kohler streets which housed Jake’s Restaurant on the first floor and two families on the second floor, who escaped safely down a rear fire escape.

1942 — 70 years ago

William M. Mills of Goundry Street reported to police the theft of eight chickens from his flock of fowls – valued at $12 apiece. Police expressed the opinion that the fowls were taken by some one for a Thanksgiving dinner.

• An International truck wheel and tire were found at the corner of Payne Avenue and Wheatfield Street. The police planned to return the lost property to the owner upon proof of ownership.
