Do You Remember Dec. 11?

Tonawanda News — 2002 — 10 years ago

• After learning about communities in social studies, first-graders at St. John Lutheran School decided to build their own. The pupils, including Isaiah Barrett, Jason Bolea, Jesse Giangrosso and others, created their own hospital, school, community college and church.

• Kim Empric, student council advisor for the Tonawanda Junior High School, was lending a hand to students decorating the gazebo at City Hall. Afterwards, the kids were treated to pizza and pop by the mayor.

1987 — 25 years ago

• Saffer Jewelers in cooperation with a well-known New York City diamond ring and jewelry manufacturer displayed more than $500,000 worth of items that were available for holiday giving.

• Mark Scott was named vice president of McBride Media Services. Prior to joining McBride, Scott was director of news and information at WBFO-AM.

1962 — 50 years ago

• The Most Rev. John Neumann, the first pastor of St. John the Baptist church in the Town of Tonawanda, was beatified by Pope John XXIII in Rome. Beatification is the last step before actual sainthood.

• Supervisor DeWitt and Mayor Duffy sought funds to improve roads linking the Town and City of Tonawanda. One project would connect Military and Two Mile Creek and provide access to Hinds and Wadsworth Streets.

1942 — 70 years ago

• Selective service registration of 18 year old men started today.

• The 1943 school budget for Tonawanda would remain at 1942 levels and so would taxes, said Supt James H. Green. The budget was $267,904.
