A Town of Lockport woman was pronounced dead at the scene of an accident after she was reportedly hit by a snowplow at 6:50 p.m. Monday near 6584 Dysinger Road.
Niagara County Sheriff James R. Voutour said the pedestrian — Joyce Garvey, 44, of Sprucewood Apartments — was crossing Dysinger Road heading south when the New York state Department of Transportation truck hit her.
Garvey was pronounced dead at the scene.
The victim’s son, Ryan Garvey, said his mother was a great woman and grandmother to his child.
“It just hasn’t hit me yet that this happened,” he said as he explained that she usually watched his baby when he was out.
Garvey said his mother was at his apartment across the street just minutes before the accident.
Garvey’s sister, who did not give her name, drove in from Niagara Falls and immediately collapsed into her brother’s arms, crying.
Kyle Alexander, an onlooker, said he did not see the accident, but came out of his Dysinger Road apartment to check out what was going on. He also explained his concern for the lack of safe places on the road for pedestrians to walk.
“It’s a shame there are no sidewalks on this road,” Alexander said.
No charges had been filed against the driver, James Stymus, as of press time. Investigator Leonard Guagliano is continuing an investigation of the accident.
Rapids Fire and South Lockport Fire Co. also responded to the scene.
