KENMORE — Stefan Mychajliw, who has served as public relations chief for the Buffalo school district for more than two years, is coming to Ken-Ton.
Mychajliw is leaving his current job to start as community relations coordinator for the Kenmore-Town of Tonawanda School District effective Dec. 15.
Michael Haggerty served as assistant superintendent for public relations during the 2008-09 school year, but was shifted to the assistant principal’s chair at Hoover Middle School this year. Superintendent Mark Mondanaro said Haggerty’s title said public relations, but the actual job was still two thirds administrative work. When the job at Hoover became available, the district offered Haggerty the opportunity to step back into a full-time administrative role and find another full-time employee to handle district communications.
Haggerty, who served as assistant principal at Kenmore Middle before taking the public relations job, said the move put him back where he can do the most good for the district’s children. It’s something he missed somewhat in his time at the district’s main office.
“I’m a district administrator, and they wanted me doing district administrator things,” Haggerty said. “This way the public relations people are doing public relations and the administrative people are doing administration.”
Before taking the position with the Buffalo district, Mychajliw was a journalist working for WGRZ-TV. He brought his media background to his public relations job, revamping the Buffalo district’s Web site and putting together promotional items for district schools. Mondanaro said he and the school board went after someone to handle community relations full time and is looking forward to seeing where things go next month.
“He’s already given us a couple of really good ideas,” the superintendent said.
