FATAL CRASH: Young mother, 5-month-old daughter killed in collision

An icy slippery road is being blamed for a crash on Grand Island that killed a young mother and her 5-month-old daughter Tuesday night. Friends of the crash victims set up a makeshift memorial along Grand Island Boulevard near Bedell Road on Wednesday morning. A handmade pink sign at the crash site reads, “We will miss you both. Rest in peace Steph and Gracie.”

Stephanie Ali, 22, was driving north on Grand Island Boulevard in her small Toyota when she lost control and slid into the path of a southbound Chevy Tahoe that was pulling the added weight of a trailer loaded with snowmobiles. “We don’t believe there are any other factors at this point that our investigation has determined, the investigation is continuing, but the predominant factor is weather-related,” said Michael Pliszka, chief of police services for the Erie County Sheriff’s Office.

A source close to Ali’s family says Stephanie had just received new tires as a Christmas present but she hadn’t yet put the new tires on her car. Her friends said the young mother was studying biology at Buffalo State College and was engaged to marry her baby girl’s father.

First responders found the baby in her infant seat in the rear of the car. Both mother and daughter were rushed to Kenmore Mercy hospital where they were pronounced dead. A 43-year-old Niagara Falls man was driving the S.U.V. that hit Ali’s car.

Neither he nor his teenage son who was riding with him were injured in the crash.
