TOWN OF TONAWANDA —
Sewer lining expected to alleviate flooding problems along Cleveland Drive and neighboring streets is projected to begin in late spring.
Ken Maving, the town water department’s chief operator, told the Town Board on Monday that a meeting was held last week to kick off plans for the project. He said once the design phase is completed, the work will be put out to bid.
The project, which will also include Orchard and McConkey drives, will be paid through $2 million the town bonded last September. That money also paid for emergency sewer lining from Lorna Lane to the town’s Creekside Sewer Station.
“The bonding was in two phases,” Maving said. “The first phase was Creekside and that has been completed.”
Work along the three streets, located off Delaware Road, just south of Brighton Road, will be nearly three years in the making. Residents in the neighborhood approached the town board in 2009 complaining of storm water infiltrating sanitary sewer lines causing backups.
William Langenfeld, who lives at 229 Cleveland Drive, hopes that the work will begin on his street.
Langenfeld acknowledged flooding problems on the other streets, but said it’s always been worse on Cleveland.
“I don’t think I have to explain that to anyone,” he added. “Cleveland Drive is the oldest street, all the others were built later.”
Most of the project will be addressed using a pipe liner that can be inserted into the pipe without digging it up.
Maving said the town can’t dictate to the contractor the street on which to begin work. However, he said the project’s timeline is anticipated to be short.
“Once they start they go really fast, manhole to manhole” Maving said. “I anticipate all work to be done in two months.”
