Concert series moving

Labatt music series is moving from downtown Lockport

Tonawanda News — LOCKPORT — The Labatt Canal Concert Series will not be held at Ulrich City Centre next year.

Instead, the nine-live-show, summertime music series likely will play out on city property between East Avenue and Chestnut Street, according to Mayor Michael Tucker.

A Labatt representative has been asked to look over the city-owned parking area behind Lockport Public Library and Lockport Family YMCA, he said this week.

The series is being moved after complaints by some City Centre tenants who say the loss of parking area every Friday hurts their businesses. While musicians don’t start performing until around 5:30 p.m. Fridays, the pre-show set up of the stage, vending and bathroom occupied the City Centre parking lot much of the day.

The series “was causing some problems for tenants. It gets to be a cluster sometimes,” Tucker said. “We want the concerts to help our small businesses, not hamper them, so we’re looking at a different area.”

Series organizers are only looking downtown, though.

A not-infrequently suggested alternative, Outwater Park, is ruled out because it lacks sufficient parking area for concert-goers, Tucker said. “And besides, the whole point of the series is to be in the business district.”

Other than City Centre, the municipal lot behind the library and YMCA is about the only area that’s large enough for the concerts, so pending Labatt’s OK it’s likely the series’ new home base. Tucker said the city will ensure daytime parking for library and Y customers is preserved.

A bonus of relocating the series to Chestnut Street is concert-goers, many of whom are visitors to the city, could get first glimpses of Lockport Ice Arena & Sports Center as it’s being raised next summer.
