Fire damage in the village of Kenmore increased nearly $40,000 in 2006 from the previous year.
Estimated fire damage in the village totaled $178,350 in 2006, up from $138, 900 in 2005, according to a statement from the Kenmore Volunteer Fire Department. Fire damage also increased in the North Delaware Fire Protection District of the town, which is also covered by the Kenmore department. This section of the town experienced nearly $25,000 more in damage then in the previous year.
Two major house fires attributed for much of the increase, according to the statement. In March, a fire on West Girard Boulevard caused $100,000 in damage, followed by a May blaze on East Girard Boulevard, which caused $125,500 in damage.
Emergency calls in 2006 also rose.
The Kenmore Volunteer Fire Department answered 1,431 emergency calls in 2006, compared to 1,292 in 2005. In October alone, the department responded to 273 emergency calls.
The volunteers worked overtime during the storm, clocking in 2,104 volunteer hours, according to the department. The department estimated that the volunteers put in nearly 8,000 hours in 2006.
