TELEVISION: Property Virgins comes to WNY

Wanted: First-time homebuyers willing to be on television.

Producers of a cable show about linking people who are buying their first home with their dream property are coming to the Niagara region and they are looking for outgoing people to appear on the show.

“Property Virgins” shown on the home and garden channel HGTV, will film here over the next four months and the shows will begin airing in the fall.

The show is based in Toronto and currently airs on the Canadian version of the cable network but will debut south of the border in the fall.

The Buffalo-Niagara area was picked for shooting because it’s close by, according to casting director Sue Skinner.

There’s no limit to the number of shows producers will film here. If there are a lot of people who appeal to Skinner and her staff, more episodes will be shot locally.

The criteria for future stars of the show include: A pre-approval for a mortgage in hand; complete inexperience when it comes to buying property; and an interest in purchasing a home between mid-June and September.

“We’re looking for outgoing, fun people,” Skinner said. “Earnest and dry need not apply.”

The show’s pitch to prospective guests is that they will be helped by a real estate agent and will be presented three “dream homes” that match their criteria.

The show ends when the couple or family decide to buy a house. Very few are “no-buys”, Skinner said.

A press release from the show’s producers reads, “Imagine if an experienced realtor could eliminate the stress of buying a home by sifting through the bewildering array of choices, narrowing it down to three dream homes based on strict criteria and then allowing the first-time buyer to simply tour the homes and choose!”

Host Sandra Rinomato, a Toronto-based real estate agent, helps buyers navigate the home selection and financing processes.

Producers keep real estate agents, financial advisors and lawyers on staff who are permitted to work in each state the show films.

“First time buyers — property virgins — need help negotiating all of the complexities of the real-estate market. Our production team is here to give them the advice and the expertise that they need,” said executive producer Philip Whelan.

Successful applicants will be needed to film over about five days, but not necessarily five days in a row.

The show has shot episodes in Dallas, Toronto and has plans to film in New Jersey, Connecticut and other parts of New York.
