TONAWANDA SCHOOLS: New Web site goes live

The secondary complex isn’t the only thing getting a makeover in the Tonawanda City School District.

Tonawanda recently unveiled its new Web site at www.tonawandacsd.org. Featuring a more user-friendly template, the site is designed to keep parents and the community informed of what’s going on in the district.

“We’re trying to use it more as a tool to communicate with the community,” said Mary Beth Scullion, the district’s assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction.

Scullion said Tonawanda teachers are particularly excited about being able to post their own pages online, with information on homework assignments and helpful links. “It’s really easy for teachers or administrators to update their pages. It’ll be more current and up to date,” she said.

Parts of the site are still under construction, but the teacher Web pages should be activated starting next week. Depending on the page they view, visitors to the site might be asked to enter a username and password. That simply means the page isn’t live yet, Scullion said.

The plan is to eventually allow parents to sign into the site and view their child’s grades and progress.

Superintendent Whitney Vantine said the district is “very happy and proud” of the new site, and that it will be under construction constantly as new features and activities are added.

The new site’s home page displays a variety of photos snapped at district events, as well as a “Headlines & Features” section that includes news on recent events. The athletics page includes a link to the Warriors’ sports schedule.

There’s also a district-wide calendar with a list of happenings at each building. “Anyone in the community can click on there and see all the different activities going on,” Scullion said. “You’re going to see some interesting stuff on the Web site.”

In addition, the new site has links for information on how to contact the Board of Education, plus meeting dates and minutes of meetings going back to 2003.
