BUSINESS: Wolfgang Puck restaurant in Niagara Falls, Ont. closed

The Wolfgang Puck Cafe on Fallsview Boulevard opened with high expectations and a VIP gala event in June 2005, but the sign has now come down and the doors are closed.

No one seems very interested in talking about what happened.

The telephone number for the business is still in operation, but the message on their machine only says it is “currently closed for the season.” Those wishing to make dinner reservations are told to contact the Skylon Tower.

A sign in the front door of the closed business relays the same information.

Carolyn Bones, president of the Niagara Falls Chamber of Commerce, said the restaurant was a member of their organization but canceled their membership last November. She had no further details.

Neither did Mayor Ted Salci’s office or the Business Development Office at city hall.

Lee Carr, marketing manager at the Skylon Tower, confirmed that is their property, but owner George Yerich Jr., did not wish to make any comment at this time.

Carr said they may issue a statement in the near future once they have more to say as to what will happen with the property.

The restaurant closed near the end of November.

Wolfgang Puck, the Austrian-born world famous chef, visited the Niagara area in 2005 when the restaurant opened and commented about the excellent quality of the fruit farms and vineyards found in this part of the world.

The new restaurant was the only one in Canada, joining five others in the U.S.

Another business that opened almost at the same time, Classic Iron Motorcycle Museum on Victoria Avenue, is also gone.

The museum housed a collection of vintage and custom motorcycles from 1916 to the present.

Old newspapers cover the front window of that business and their phone number is out of service.
