Thursday’s warm weather allowed for the overdue dedication of the village’s newest landmark — a clock donated by the local Rotary Club.
Situated at the intersection of Delaware Avenue and Delaware Road, the clock was a gift from the Rotarians to cap off the Streetscape Project that completely overhauled the walkways along the village’s main thoroughfare.
The group annually supports charities like the Ronald McDonald House and places like Kenmore Mercy Hospital and the Albright-Knox Art Gallery just to name a few. But Rotary Past-president Dominic Hofert said donating the clock was something the group could do to show its appreciation for the entire community.
“In 2005 the Rotary Club was celebrating its 100th year, and we thought it would be a nice time to do something for the village,” Hofert said.
That’s when fundraising began, and last fall the clock was finally placed in the ground, in the center of a flower bed, bearing the Rotary Club’s symbol on top and located just a few steps away from the gazebo. Now that the flowers are in bloom, the club thought the time was right for a proper dedication.
Mayor Patrick Mang said whether the eyes looking at the clock belong to a resident who sees it often or of a visitor just passing through, it is something that adds to the character of the village.
“The clock is a wonderful focal point that can be enjoyed by everyone whether they’re walking or driving,” Mang said.
